Imsouane (pronounced "im-soo-AHN") sits about 85 km north of Agadir on the scenic coastal road. Surf pioneers found it in the 1960s and 70s, drawn by the impossibly long wave wrapping into its bay, and for decades it stayed a well-kept secret. Today it's a beloved stop on any Morocco surf trip — still small, still laid-back, but with hostels, surf camps and cliff-top cafés serving fresh seafood and mint tea.

On the best days it runs 600–700 metres — rides can last up to two minutes, making it arguably the longest wave in Morocco and one of the longest in Africa. The take-off is right by the harbour headland, and the paddle out is almost effortless (hop a few rocks). Perfect for beginners and a dream for longboarders, but still a blast on a shortboard or fish when the swell builds. All levels.
Up to 700mSandyLongboardAround the headland on the north side of the bay, Cathedral is a completely different beast — a faster, hollower break over a rock-and-reef bottom. When the swell pushes 4–8ft it wakes up with punchy, sometimes barrelling sections best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Access needs a short rock scramble, so crowds are lighter. 🌊 See which Imsouane spot is best today →The main season is October to April, when the mid-Atlantic delivers consistent NW swells and the winds are at their calmest — light or offshore in the mornings, giving the glassy conditions Imsouane is famous for. December to February brings the biggest, cleanest days. Summer (June–August) has smaller waves, ideal for total beginners but sometimes frustrating for experienced surfers. Imsouane is small, so options centre on surf camps, hostels and guesthouses. Surf camps are the easiest choice — they bundle accommodation, lessons, board and wetsuit hire, and often yoga. Budget surf hostels offer a sociable, communal vibe; guesthouses and boutique stays give more privacy. Book ahead in peak season, as the village fills up fast. Note: parts of the Tasblast cliff area saw demolitions in early 2024 (linked to coastal redevelopment), but Magic Bay, Cathedral and the harbour village remain intact and welcoming.
Even on flat days Imsouane is a lovely place to be: wander the fishing port and watch the daily catch come in, sip mint tea at a cliff-top café, catch the sunset over the bay, or join a yoga class. It's the kind of place where a planned two-day stop turns into a week.
